Steven “Diesel” Whitley

Steven “Diesel” Whitley is a native of Norfolk, VA. From an early age, Steven has always had a desire to impact the community. Raised in the church, Diesel served his community through homeless food and clothing drives, community festivals , giving Thanksgiving baskets, Christmas gifts and other events. Graduating from Booker T. Washington High School, Diesel received his BS degree in Business Management at Norfolk State University.
While attending Norfolk State, Diesel had a memorable basketball career including leading the Spartans to an upset over Alabama in the N.I.T tournament. Unfortunately, the COVID pandemic ended his college career, while an injury ended his professional career. He immediately stepped into a lane he himself didn’t at the time think of and that was giving back to his community. Following the death of George Floyd, Diesel led numerous marches, including the Unity Walk, featuring athletes from all Hampton Roads area colleges alongside Mayor Aaron Rouse, and Delegate Cliff Hayes. Additionally, he hosted his first back to school drive, “Stay in school, School is cool” stressing the message of the importance of education and progressive learning.
Currently, Diesel is an Assistant Coach at Norfolk State University for the men’s basketball team. He models the image of motivation to his players to persevere through their college career, while also being successful on the basketball floor and properly preparing them for life after they graduate. He credits the Journey of his life not only to Norfolk State University, but to Norfolk, Va in general. It was simple for him as he always use a quote; “It took a village to raise me ” and in that honor he vows to give back to his community as much as he can.
Home is where the Heart is, and Diesel is living proof of it!
